During the summer months, it is especially important that your air conditioner is running efficiently. In addition to having your air conditioner checked for the summer, we have a tips on How to Reduce Your Air Conditioning Costs.
1. Lower Your Thermostat
By lowering your thermostat you can reduce your energy costs by 4% per degree. It is a good practice to turn up the thermostat a few degrees when leaving your house. If you don’t already have one, we can install a programmable thermostat so you don’t have to remember to turn it up whenever you leave for the day, the thermostat will remember for you. Or you can even use an app from your phone to control the temperature.
2. Use Fans
Using a fan for individual rooms is a great way to save on your energy costs and keep you air conditioner from running so much. A fan in every room is ideal, but even a well placed floor fan will keep the air circulated and keep the room cooler, causing less need for the air conditioner to run.
3. Seal the Cracks
Hot air can seep in through the cracks in windows and doors. Make sure you find and seal any cracks with caulking. The bottoms of doors often have a small gap, allowing heat to enter your home. You can use a shirt or a towel to help restrict the amount of heat getting in.
Keep Lights Off
Obviously keeping your lights off will help your overall energy costs. In addition to the obvious, they also give off heat, creating a higher temperature in your home and cause your A/C unit to run more frequently and possible need repair and maintenance.
Eat Lighter
What does eating have to do with your air conditioner? Well, when we heat heavier foods like steak, other beef and pork, they make our bodies hotter. This may cause us to feel the need to lower the temperature of the air conditioner.
