Safety & Energy Tips from Lakeside Air

Adjust the Temperature On Your Thermostat

Homeowners can save up to three percent on their utility bill for every degree they lower their furnace or raise their air conditioner. Perhaps wear layers during winter, and consider installing an attic fan to circulate cool evening air during the summer. Ceiling fans cost little to run and are also an energy efficient way of spreading air throughout your home.

Once you’ve decided upon a comfortable temperature, maintain that temp using your adjustable thermostat. Many of our customers don’t take advantage of their programmable thermostats! If you need a crash course on how to use your thermostat, or you wish to have an adjustable model installed, call us today.

Make Sure You Have Adequate Attic Insulation

Energy experts claim that 40 percent or more of your heat and conditioned air may be escaping through the roof. Unfortunately, many builders skimp when it comes to attic insulation—so your home may not be protected. One of the most important things you can do to ensure the comfort of your home – along with lower energy costs- is making sure you have sufficient attic insulation.

Replace Old or Damaged Windows

New windows are a costly investment BUT – they will save you money in the long term: up to 15 percent each year! If money  is the issue, perhaps begin replacing them one-by-one, starting with the larger windows. In the meantime, remember to check for leaky window and door seals and caulking—and replace/reseal them, if necessary.

When You're Not Using Your Fireplace, Close the Dampers.

Chimneys with dampers allow warm air to escape from your home. Make sure all of your vents and registers are free of obstruction so that all warm and cool air circulates easily and efficiently.

Change Furnace Filters Four Times Per Year

Your HVAC system has to work harder when your filter is clogged with dust and debris.  It’s critical to replace or clean filters on a regular basis to maintain the performance and cleanliness of your AC equipment. Lakeside Air recommends four times a year, but pet owners or those suffering from allergies & asthma should change it even more often (up to 6 times a year).

Though they cost more, high-efficiency, allergy-friendly filters last longer and deliver improved filtration. To inquire about the best filter for your HVAC system, or to schedule your seasonal system maintenance visit, contact Lakeside Air today at 214-642-7468!
